When you’re at the higher end of Sunset Boulevard, turn left by the signs toward Beverly Hills/West Hollywood. In 1992, Vince Neil bought into the Bar One at 9229 Sunset Boulevard, Beverly Hills. Here, he met and dined with many Hollywood A-listers, before he started dating Shannen Doherty, star of Beverly Hills 90210. The club has seen many name changes since, and is now called Goodbar. 

In March 1998, former Motley Crue singer John Corabi met his future wife, Layla Dawn, at the Key Club, located at 9039 Sunset Boulevard, West Hollywood. The Key Club was previously called Gazzarri’s and then later also Billboard Live. 

At 9001 Sunset Boulevard, you’ll find the Rainbow Bar & Grill. Motley Crue were regulars here and played many gigs at the Rainbow stage in the early 1980’s. This was also the club that Nikki Sixx and then-girlfriend Lita Ford left during the infamous incident in early 1982, the riots on Sunset Strip. If you’re lucky, you might still to this day catch Tommy Lee or Nikki here. 

At 8901 Sunset Boulevard is the Whisky A Go-Go. This is the venue where Tom Zutaut first saw Motley Crue in April 1982, after seeing a huge crowd of kids underneath the famous marquee that said, “Motley Crue - Sold Out.” This led to the band being signed to Elektra Records. On October 5, 1989, Motley also played a warm-up show for the Dr. Feelgood tour here, under their pseudonym The Foreskins. That recording was later used for the video for first single Kickstart My Heart. 

North Clark Street - here, Motley Crue’s manager, Alan Coffman, financed a 2-bedroom apartment, some 50 steps from the Whisky A Go-Go. Tommy, Nikki, and Vince moved in here in June 1981, and thus the place became known as the “Motley House”, before the gang moved out in March 1982. 

In June 1992, Vince Neil moved into the Bel Age Hotel, at 1020 North San Vicente Boulevard in West Hollywood. In November the following year, he moved out after having bought a beachfront mansion in Malibu. Nikki Sixx attended the annual SFX Music Convention here in May 2000, and Motley Crue hosted a listening party for their new album, New Tattoo, at the hotel rooftop. Press and radio representatives were invited to preview two songs from the album. 

The Viper Room, at 8852 Sunset Boulevard, West Hollywood, was previously owned by actor Johnny Depp. In 1996, Tommy Lee ended up in a fist-fight with paparazzi photographer Henry Trappler, and was sentenced to a $17,500 fine. Tommy also had to do over 250 hours of community service as well as being placed on probation for two years. Nikki Sixx spent New Years Eve 1996 here with his new wife Donna D’Errico, who did the countdown to 1997 in her rubber Cat Woman outfit. 

Tower Records was located at 8844 Sunset Boulevard. This is where Vince Neil was ready to fight Axl Rose after an incident backstage at the 1989 MTV Awards. Nikki Sixx and Mick Mars also signed copies of The Dirt book at an in-store appearance here on the last day of May 2001. Later, in 2004, Nikki’s side-project, Brides of Destruction, did an in-store here, and Tommy Lee also did a signing for his Tommyland book. 

Not far from the House of Blues, is where the Sunset Strip Tattoo parlor used to be, at 8418 Sunset Boulevard. The members of Motley Crue had many tattoos done here over the years, as can be seen in the “Uncensored” video. Further down the street, at 7524 Sunset, you find the new location for the shop. Look for that famous red awning and logo as can be seen in the music video for “Dr. Feelgood”. 

The Argyle on the south-headed side of the road, at 8358 Sunset Boulevard. When Nikki Sixx was a boy, he lived in this building, on the 9th floor, with his mother. Back then, the house was known by its original name, Sunset Towers. The grand old 13-story building was the first high-rise on the Strip, and is one of Hollywood’s best examples of Art Deco-design. Many of the Hollywood greats once stayed here, including Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, and John Wayne. 

This is The Body Shop, at 8250 Sunset Boulevard, with its neon Girls, Girls, Girls logo. You can park around the corner to check out the action inside. Back on May 14th, 1987 Motley Crue held a listening party here for their new album release, Girls, Girls, Girls.

The Rock Walk/Guitar Center is located at 7435 Sunset Boulevard. Motley Crue were inducted to the Rock Walk by making their hand prints in wet cement on May 20th, 1997. Their prints can be found just left of the center of the entrance. 

At 7180 Sunset Boulevard is The Seventh Veil, where Motley Crue have been known to “raise hell.” If you’re looking for the exact same venue as was shown in the “Girls, Girls, Girls” video, well, you’re going to be disappointed. It has since been renovated. 

The Warehouse Store at 7127 Sunset Boulevard, at the corner of La Brea, is where Nikki Sixx sometimes worked between his two bands Sister and London, prior to the formation of Motley Crue. Back then, Warehouse Store was a record store, but today, it’s a nail/beauty salon.  

In 1995, Vince Neil spent a lot of time here, at the Children’s Hospital, at 4650 Sunset Boulevard, after his daughter Skylar had been diagnosed with kidney cancer, which eventually led to her untimely passing. 

At 903 N. La Cienega Boulevard, you find the prized French restaurant, L’Orangerie. This is where Vince Neil married Heidi Mark on May 28th, 2000. 

This is Hard Rock Café, at 8600 Beverly Boulevard - where Nikki Sixx rode his first Harley Davidson motorbike through the entrance doors, before donating it to the restaurant. The bike has since been moved to another Hard Rock Café, though. 

In May 1982, Motley Crue signed a record deal with Elektra Records. They celebrated with dinner at the restaurant Benihana of Tokyo, at 38 N. La Cienega Boulevard. Vince Neil, completely wasted as he was, kept biting and smashing his Margarita glasses, as he hassled the waitress. The manager eventually threw them out of the restaurant. 

Sanctuary, at 180 N. Robertson Boulevard is where Tommy Lee and some of his friends went on New Years’ Eve in 1994. Pamela Anderson served him a cinnamon schnapps drink.. This marked the beginning of one of the most famous Hollywood relationships of all time. 

At 345 N. Maple Drive, Beverly Hills, is Elektra Records. No further introduction needed. 

The birthplace of Motley Crue’s lead singer. Take a drive by the Queen of Angels Hospital at 1300. N. Vermont Avenue, Hollywood. This is where Vince Neil was born on a Wednesday, the 8th of February, 1961. 

The Tropicana at 1250 N. Western Avenue, Hollywood, is a strip club which Motley Crue used to frequent. Vince Neil, in particular, was a fan of the mud wrestling pit. In August 1986, Vince had his own mud pit installed at his home. He often brought back a dozen girls from the Tropicana to wrestle nude for him and his friends only. One of these girls went by the name Sharise, and she later became Vince’s wife. The lyrics in the song Girls, Girls, Girls even goes, “Tropicana’s where I lost my heart.” 

After recording parts of the Girls, Girls, Girls album at Conway Recording Studios, at 5100 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, the Platinum selling record had its final mix completed here. 

Fuller Street. Tommy Lee once had a condo on this street, where he lived with his girlfriend Candice Starrek in late 1983. Candice’s real name is Elaine Starchuk, and she soon became Tommy’s first wife. 

Cherokee Studios at 751 N. Fairfax Avenue. Here, Motley Crue commenced the recording of their second studio album, Shout at the Devil, in May 1983. The sessions saw girls coming and going from the studio in a constant stream. The band also recorded their third album, Theatre of Pain, here (in February 1985). In 1986, the band released a home video titled “Uncensored”, which featured video clips and interviews with the band, which were also recorded here. 

The famous black front of the Troubadour, at 9081 Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood. Motley Crue set a new attendance record at this club the first time they performed here. They eventually went on to sell out the place many times. This is also where the famous duo, Cheech and Chong, were discovered. 

Motley Crue’s third studio album, Theatre of Pain, was mixed at Record Plant, at W. 3rd Street, which closed shortly thereafter, and later reopened at 1032 N. Sycamore Avenue, Hollywood, in the former Radio Recorders Annex, a historic studio where Elvis Presley, among others, recorded. Vince Neil entered the Record Plant studios again in 1992, after his departure from Motley Crue, and recorded most of his first solo album, Exposed, here. 

After the release of their 1994 self-titled album, Motley Crue started working on their next album at A&M Studios, located at 1416 N. La Brea Avenue in Hollywood, with Bob Rock on production duties. The band also wrote the two unreleased tracks, “The Year I Lived In A DAy” and “La Dolce Vita” here, in December 1994. Later, Mick Mars had three guitars stolen from the studio. Motley Crue’s New Tattoo album was also mixed here. 

Speaking of the New Tattoo album, keep heading north. The Lava Lounge, at 1533 N. La Brea Avenue, Hollywood, is the club where the band shot the pictures for the booklet accompanying the album, which was released on April 2nd, 2000. 

The Star! Make a stop by the Musician’s Institute at 6752 Hollywood Boulevard. Here, you can admire and take a picture of Motley Crue’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star, which was unveiled on January 25th, 2006. 

The Opium Den, at 1608 Cosmo Street, Hollywood, is where Nikki Sixx and Donna D’Errico had their first blind date in August 1996. Their date later commenced at the Dragonfly, at 6510 W. Santa Monica Boulevard. 

Continue on to 1014 Vine Street to find St. Crystal Sound Studios. This is where Motley Crue recorded their very first demos. The studio is now called Barefoot Studio & Recordings, and fans have said the owner wants no visitors, so you’re advised to just glance from a safe distance.

Going north from Hollywood, after driving a good 7 minutes, you can stop by the Universal Studios CityWalk at Universal City Plaza. At the Universal Amphitheater, Motley Crue were presented with an award for Best Heavy Metal Album at the MTV Music Awards in September 198. Vince Neil waited for and later punched Guns N’ Roses guitarist, Izzy Stradlin, in the face as he came off stage, for recently hitting on his wife Sharise at the Cathouse club. That triggered a feud between the two bands.

Going west on Ventura Boulevard towards Sherman Oaks, you’ll find Valley Vista Boulevard. Nikki Sixx moved here in April 1986, after his then-girlfriend Nicole had picked out the house for him as he was out on tour. Nikki hardly left the house, using a lot of heavy drugs daily. Bret Michaels from Poison lived at 14850 Valley Vista Boulevard. This is actually his house, as I don’t have the exact address of Nikki’s house. 

Rumbo Recordings at 20215 Saticoy Street, Canoga Park, is one of the studios where Motley Crue recorded their Girls, Girls, Girls album. Vince Neil also recorded some of the songs off of his first solo album, Exposed, here. After leaving the band, John Corabi recorded most of his first solo album here as well.

Nikki Sixx and Lita Ford’s apartment is located northeast of Hollywood. After leaving the Motley House, Nikki moved into his girlfriend Lita Ford’s residence, at 4859 Coldwater Canyon Avenue, apartment 6, in Sherman Oaks.

Magnolia Liquor Market at 3801 W. Magnolia Boulevard, Burbank, is the store where Nikki Sixx used to work. One night in 1978, Mick Mars walked in to get his cheap tequila and thus met Nikki Sixx behind the counter. Mick invited Nikki to come down the road later that night and watch him perform with his southern rock band, Spiders & Cowboys. 

Vince Neil’s daughter, Skylar Lynnae Neil, rests in grave #930 at the Forest Lawn Cemetery, at Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles. Her grave is located behind the church, just off the main road of the cemetery. Also, former Motley Crue drummer Randy Castillo’s memorial services were held here, in the Old North Church, on March 30, 2002. He was later laid to his final rest in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Many of the Hollywood A-listers are buried here, at the Forest Lawn Cemetery. 

If you’re driving north from Los Angeles on the Pacific Coast Highway, you’re passing the Moonshadows restaurant at 20356 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu. This is the restaurant where Vince Neil spent a lot of time after his young daughter had been diagnosed with cancer. The night she passed away, in August 1985, Vince and his fiancée Heidi had sat down here to eat, when Vince’s ex-wife (and mother of his daughter) called and said they needed to return to the hospital because her vital signs were dropping fast. Vince arrived at the hospital ten minutes after she had passed away. He then drove back to Moonshadows and inebriated himself with alcohol and valium pills in an effort to cope with the loss. 

Nikki Sixx and (then) wife Donna D’Errico dined at the Bambu Restaurant in the Country Mart Shopping Center at 3835 Cross Creek Road, Malibu, on the last day of August in 1986. After the date, he invited her back to his mansion where she stayed the night. Late in 1999, the restaurant had a change of name and owners, and is now called Nobu. 

The Court Offices of Judge Lawrence J. Mira at Division 1, Malibu Municipal Court is located at 23575 Civic Center Way, Malibu, is a familiar sight to a certain Tommy Lee. Here, Judge Mira sentenced him to six months in civic county jail for spousal abuse against his then-wife, Pamela Anderson. The year was 1998. Judge Mira also found Tommy to be in violation of his probation in 2000, and ordered for him to be immediately returned to the Los Angeles County Jail for the next five days. 

Ralph’s Supermarket is also along the Pacific Coast Highway, in the large Malibu Colony Plaza at 23841 W. Malibu Road. Tommy Lee and Pamela used to do their grocery shopping here. Pamela still shops here, as do a lot of other famous people from the Malibu area. 

Nikki Sixx, Donna D’Errico and their family lived here up until their divorce. The Sixx Estate, a huge ranch, behind the hills that can be seen from the road. For strangers and passers-by, you can only get to the “gate” and you are being watched by security guards. So don’t stay too long. 

Nikki Sixx’s wife, Donna D’Errico, opened her day spa and health business, Zenspa, in the year 2002 at Suite 120, 23975 Park Sorrento, Calabasas. The place has new owners today, but it’s still worth a visit. 

In the Woodland Hills area, at the Taft High School, the music video for Smokin’ in the Boys Room was filmed. It’s not too far from the Hollywood area. You get a kick from going through the hills seeing the beautiful scenery as you cross hills and valleys. 

Going north-east from Los Angeles, you will find South Hills High School at 645 S. Barranca Avenue, West Covina. This is the school Tommy Lee went on to after graduating from Royal Oak High. Here, he elected not to take drum lessons, but instead kept up his playing by joining the school marching band, and a local drum corp. 

At 15 years of age, Vince Neil went to the Charter Oak High School at 1430 E. Covina Boulevard, Covina. Here, he smoked angel dust and was busted. He also drove girls to his home during the lunch breaks, to have sex with them. Budding rock musician, James Alverson, transferred to Charter Oak High and chose Vince to be the lead singer of his band. The duo soon formed Rockandi together. Vince was later kicked out of Charter Oak High for indecent behavior. 

Tommy Lee’s first gig ever was with his first band, US 101, at the football stadium of Upland High School at 565 W. 11th Street, Upland. 

Tommy Lee’s childhood home, in Covina, close to his old school. The house looks like it did when he lived there with his parents. Tommy’s room was to the left above the garage. Tommy’s dad soundproofed the garage so that his son could practice in peace. As the family redid their driveway, Tommy signed the wet concrete with his initials, T.B., and they’re still there today. 

The Palladium - the very first time the four original members played together on a stage, and again after reuniting. A few hundred people attended the event, and welcomed back the world’s most notorious band, in December of 2005. 

Just north of Hollywood, in one of the many smaller cities you pass, Nikki Sixx used to live for a while. It’s not so well documented so the exact time period is not known. He hasn’t talked much about it through the years. 

Glen Helen Park, San Bernardino, is the place that set the frames for the infamous US ‘83 Festival. Motley Crue’s big break-through show. Today, the Glen Helen Park has a permanent stage and is used for all kinds of shows and concerts, including the OzzFest shows. 

Glendale Civic Auditorium is where Motley Crue did a huge, successful show on May 7th, 1982, just around the corner of the old backyards of Tommy Lee and Vince Neil. The band hasn’t returned here after the Too Fast For Love tour, but you can still find some vinyl bootlegs from the show here. 

Klown Records in Santa Monica is where Motley Crue recorded some of the vocals for the new songs on the Red, White & Crue compilation album. Plus, Nikki Sixx did all his rehearsals and recordings for the debut album of his solo project, Brides of Destruction. The studio was owned by Stevo Bruno, a man of many faces. If you call ahead of time, you might be able to swing by for a quick tour around the facilities. It’s a very cool place. 

Cedars Sinai Hospital was the hospital Nikki Sixx was taken to after his Heroin overdose in 1987. The hospital is located near Hard Rock Cafe and Beverly Hills. 

Around the start of the new millennium, Tommy Lee decided to open up his own rock club. One in Miami, and one here in Hollywood. He called it the Rokclub, and it’s in the heart of Hollywood, on a side road from Hollywood Boulevard. 

Biltmore and Four Seasons Hotel, Santa Barbara. Tommy Lee got married here (for the second time) in 1986 to Heather Locklear in front of 500 guests. Nikki Sixx was supposed to be the best man but stood Tommy up as he was too high on coke from having just done a line in the bathroom just minutes before the ceremony. Skydivers and white doves graced this event, and also a lot of the rich and the famous, including band members from Quiet Riot, Night Ranger, Autograph, Ratt, and special guest, DJ Rikki Rachtmann. 

Beverly Hills Municipal Court were the frames of the much talked about incident where Tommy Lee punched a photographer and got sued. This happened right outside of the Viper Room on Sunset Boulevard on September 29th, 1996. Tommy was sentenced to pay $5000 by March 11th, and do more than 250 hours community service, plus an additional $17,500 to the photographer and his lawyer. 

The Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles was where Tommy Lee stayed for 90 days in 1998, following the trial where he was tried and sentenced for spousal abuse against his ex-wife Pamela Anderson. Gotta say I have rarely seen so many cops in such a small area in my entire life. 

In the early 2000’s, Vince Neil fulfilled his life-long dream of owning a tattoo shop in Las Vegas. The studio, Vince Neil Ink, sits right on the Las Vegas Strip. It is a cool tattoo studio with some of his stage-used items hanging on the wall, including a guitar, and a full body suit, and also one of Vince’s personal motorcycles. You can call ahead of time to make an appointment, but the staff are pretty flexible, so you don’t need one. You can just drop by and get inked. Opening hours are 11 A.M.-4 A.M.! 

Junkers Design located at a place in the Los Angeles Downtown, a place that could make you a bit suspicious. This place was not the easiest to find and there aren’t any road signs leading up to it or anything. It’s not a shop as we know it, but anyone who wants to spend a little extra on some real exclusive rock clothing can go there to splurge… This would be the place that the members of Motley Crue went to in 2005 and 2006 to get stuff tailor made. 

At 655 Jefferson Boulevard in Los Angeles, you’ll find The Shrine Auditorium. On January 27th, 1997, it hosted the American Music Awards with Motley Crue performing their 1997 version of Shout at the Devil from their Greatest Hits album. The performance was introduced by none other than Pamela Anderson. 

Many times have the Los Angeles Court rooms been visited by one or more of the members of Motley Crue. The skyscraper on 255 E. Temple Street is no exception. Who doesn’t remember the time where Vince Neil wished Tommy Lee a “Happy FUCKING New Year” on live television? Sure earned them a lawsuit coming from CBS. The trial was carried out here, as was the one following the lawsuit between Nikki Sixx and the Dragonfly Clothing company, and last but not least, the divorce between Sixx and ex-wife Donna D’Errico. 

On 1651 Naomi Avenue in Los Angeles, in the early 1980’s, Motley Crue used to rehearse nine songs every day for a period of time, leading up to the recording of their debut album Too Fast For Love. Today, it looks to be a car parts shop or something, but in 1981, it was a different story altogether.

Sunset Boulevard, August 18th, 2011. The band was honored and played a show in the middle of the streets. It was a packed day, and the band also showed up at the House of Blues for an award ceremony.

Everyone attending had the chance to buy a bottle of the Jack Daniel’s Motley Crue Edition, which is very hard to get your hands on today. The band looked happy and gave all they were expected to for the fans in attendance. It was a very special day in Motley Crue history.
